Abstract

Dental implant restoration satisfies edentulous patient in both fuctional and esthetic matters. Clinical success rate of implant restoration has gone up to 90~95% since the surface modification of implant body has been performed. But still lots of failure on implant restoration has been reported. Among these failures implant body fracture maybe fatal to both patient and dentist. Balshi et al. reported 8 case of implant body fracture in 4045 implant restorated cases. Mayo clinic study also reported 3 cases of implant body fracture in 1778 implant restorated cases. Jemt and Lekholm reported single implant body fracture in 259 implant restorated cases but Zarb and Schmitt had no implant body fracture failure on their study.

These following factors could be considerable in dental implant body fracture.

1.design or production flaws
2.non-passive fit of the superstructure
3.occlusal force(load factor)
4.parafunctional force(Bruxism,clenching)
5.design of the superstructure
6.implant location
7.implant size
8.metal fatigue
9.bone resorption around the implant
